Accountability

D6
Accountability assigns answerability and responsibilities for AI-system functioning and principles according to roles, context, and ability to act.
Review status: 2027-08-28
Technical explanation
It can make organizational decision-making processes and Human-AI team roles more explicit.
Conceptual boundaries
Accountability is not documentation or transparency alone and does not by itself determine legal consequences or redress in a particular case.
Provider-neutral example
An organization can name the owner of an AI-supported eligibility workflow, record the decision basis, and define how a questioned decision is reviewed by designated roles.
Limitations
Clear assignments can improve role clarity but do not by themselves make a decision correct, fair, lawful, or effective.
